Bernardsville Public Library

The haunted part of the building was a tavern during the Revolutionary War. The inn keeper’s daughter was married to a Dr. Byram, who was hanged by General Anthony Wayne shortly after the marriage for being a spy for the British. His body was delivered to the tavern in a large box and the inn keeper’s daughter (not knowing the contents) opened it. When confronted by the sight of her husband, the young bride had a breakdown.

Weeping is still heard in the meeting room of the library and the public reading room (where she opened the casket). Her apparition began being sighted when renovations were undertaken in 1974. The ghost makes its presence known so often that she was issued a library card.
