The Conference House

The Conference House was originally known as Bentley Mansion and built by Captain Christopher Billopp. Captain Billopp was engaged to a young woman who lived with him in the house. He called off the engagement and the young woman died shortly after in the house. Captain Billopp himself lived in the house after his retirement and also died there. Billopp’s grandson, also named Christopher, later murdered a young slave girl, with whom he might have had a relationship. Part of the activity in the house is a reenactment of this event. During the Revolutionary War, the house was occupied by the British and the bodies of British soldiers were buried in unmarked graves in the cellar. Some of the activity focuses on the cellar and is attributed to these soldiers.
