EVPs
An EVP is is sound recorded that is only heard upon playback of the recording, but not audible at the time of the recording. These recordings are usually short and identifiable as male, female, or child. Even the sounds of animals have been recorded.
For the living, our voices are generated by air from our lungs forced over our vocal cords, in turn causing the larynx to create a tone. This is transmitted through the air to our ears as a wave, which hits our ear drum and causes the membrane to vibrate, causing us to hear sound. So, how does an entity with no physical body create sound?
One possibility involves the way in which a microphone works. Most microphones publicly available are dynamic microphones. These microphones use a plastic membrane that vibrates a magnetic element and coil to send an electrical signal to the recorder. It’s possible that ghosts can manipulate the magnet and coil through the use of a magnetic field (see EMF). This could also explain why no voice is heard at the time of recording. How a ghost knows to do this, however, is still a complete mystery.
Skeptics argue that EVPs are not voices of the dead, but are radio/ television interference. Some others claim that the sounds recorded are so vague that they become a sort of audio “ink blot”. Those listening could make the sounds into almost anything. This last group of skeptics do have support for their idea. Some, but not all, EVPs are very vague and experiments done with such recordings have shown that people listening will attempt to make sense of the sounds they hear, but what they hear is highly subjective and varied.
The recommended procedure for capturing EVPs is to first leave the recorder running in the location by itself. Next, sit in the location and supervise the recording, but do not make any sounds. Finally, ask questions and attempt communication with any entities that may be present. It is important to eliminate any natural causes for sounds heard upon playback and also to eliminate the voices of individuals you know were present during the recording. It is also important to use an external microphone to eliminate any sounds the recording device itself may produce.
