Hull House
Hull House
The Hull House was built in 1856 by Charles Hull as a shelter for struggling immigrants. In the 1880’s it was converted into a settlement house for the poor by Ellen Starr and Jane Addams. Nothing unusual was reported until the early 1900s.
Hull House is a good example of an urban legend. The legend, in its various forms, is of a devil child born to a local immigrant woman as punishment for some transgression and brought to Hull House to be kept secret.
Addams insisted there was no truth to the story, but locals (particularly the women) were convinced the child was being kept in the attic and many women made special trips from far away to see it.
Even today, there are reports of a devil child looking out from the attic windows and the house regularly is listed in books of haunted houses.
